YOUTH AT RISK WARRIORS" DELVES DEEP FOR TRANSFORMATION OF THEMSELVES AND THEIR COMMUNITY

- NEW YORK, NY, August 12, 2005 - Young warriors from Youth at Risk"s Warriors" Way program in Far Rockaway Queens are determined for change within their community. The young men describe their community as a desolate place to live and are taking on the challenge to reshape their neighborhood. It is their hope and desire that by transforming their community they will be able to surround themselves and their neighbors with a force that drives them to success.

On August 20th, 2005, the participant"s in the Warriors Way program will redevelop the garden at J.H.S. 198 in Far Rockaway Queens. Angela Logan, principal at J.H.S 198, reported, "Our mission is to develop an educational environment that will motivate, cultivate and enrich all the students it serves in order to meet standards of excellence. It is our goal to involve parents and the community to jointly create a school environment that will nurture our students" intellectual, social, emotional and physical needs". Because of the warriors commitment to the community they have generated a buzz with others who are working for the residence of Far Rockaway.

Council Member James Sanders and Assemblywoman Michele Titus of District 31 are two pioneering forces in the Far Rockaway community that have committed to be a part of this memorable event. The differences these two individuals have already made are; Councilman James Sanders authored the "Bullet Bill", which restricts sales of ammunition to minors. Sanders also served on Community School Board 27 for more than 12 years, becoming the first African-American president and vice president. Assemblywoman Michele Titus has always demonstrated her dedication to protecting the stability of her community; she has introduced and supported policy that would mandate after school programs in every public school.

*About Youth at Risk*
Youth at Risk provides one-to-one mentors for youth from underserved communities between the ages of 12-25 whose circumstances and environment put them at risk for failure academically, socially, emotionally and physically. We work with youth and their families who are "falling through the cracks—teenage parents, violent youth, fatherless young men, youth with disabilities, families in shelters, and HIV positive parents. The Warriors" Way Program is committed to preventing the incarceration and young fatherhood for males ages 11-15, living in single mother households. The program aims to empower them to stay in school and handle aggression through verbal communication.
